A smart solution for future cell material storage

We are proud to announce our collaboration with the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI). This contract, which naturally demands close cooperation within the client-contractor relationship, is more than just a project; it represents a significant step in the intralogistics automation of the process for storing, processing, and destroying cell material, as part of the expansion of the DNA-V Act and the new DNA-C trajectory.

Why this project is so special?

The NFI will become responsible for managing the collection and storage of cell material from suspects, in anticipation of the upcoming DNA-C Act. This is a task that demands precision and reliability. The DNA-C Act is an expansion of the DNA Testing of Convicted Persons Act (DNA-V). This expansion will allow the collection of cell material (conservatory cell material) from suspects of crimes for which pre-trial detention is permitted and who have been placed in police custody. A DNA profile can only be created from the stored cell material after a conviction. In cases of acquittal, dismissal of charges, or no longer being a suspect, the material must be destroyed. This necessitates a robust, automated storage system, which is where TBWB came into play.

Our custom solution: The Vmax

Commissioned by the NFI, we have joined forces to create a state-of-the-art storage system. The core of this solution? Our proven Vmax Picking Robot. This robot, which has already established its reputation in the pharmaceutical sector and hospitals, is now being adapted by our expertise for a completely new application: the automated processing of cell material that needs to be destroyed.

Bart Friederichs, our CEO, is clear: "The Vmax has not only proven itself in the pharmaceutical sector and in hospitals, but with TBWB's expertise, it has also been successfully applied in industrial and intralogistics environments for years. We are now working diligently to equip the machine to be installed with a unit for the automated processing of cell material for which a destruction order has been given. This will allow us to implement the customized system at the NFI." This is pure innovation and bespoke solutions in action!

An intensive journey built on trust

The process leading to this award was intensive and characterized by deep collaboration and intensive guidance from the client. Arjenne Janssen, DNA-C project leader for the NFI, speaks of "intensive cooperation with all involved parties." Extensive market research was conducted, discussions were held with various companies, and visits were made to other systems and hospitals. There is great confidence in TBWB and the chosen solution: "We were looking for a customized solution, and we firmly believe that this supplier can deliver it," says Arjenne Janssen.
